About us
Ngāti Kahungunu is the third largest iwi and geographically the tribe has the second longest coastline in the country from Paritū in the North to Tūrakirae in the South.
Ngāti Kahungunu Kōhanga Reo since inception in 1982, have had 120 Kōhanga establish. Our rohe has had the most home-based Kōhanga 36 in total. As of April 2024, four of the original home-based are still open and operating with several having merged and or closed. We have a mixture of community, marae, Kura Kaupapa based Kōhanga to capitalise on our collective Matauranga Māori, knowledge, skills and attributes which many derive through our eponymous ancestor Kahungunu.
Currently there are 59 Kōhanga Reo which comprise our 10 Purapura and 1200 enrolled mokopuna. For Kōhanga Reo contact information click here.
