Welcome to Te Kahui Maunga region (Taranaki, Whanganui, Ruapehu and Rangitīkei, also known collectively as Aotea rohe). The Aotea rohe embraces the Whanganui, Rangitikei, Taihape, Waimarino, Taumarunui, Ohura, and Taranaki district encompassing the traditional waka boundaries of Aotea, Kurahaupo and Tokomaru.
The Aotea rohe is home to 45 Kōhanga Reo currently operating today. In earlier years up to 89 Kōhanga Reo were operating across the rohe, but government changes and new regulations resulted in the closure of a number of our Kōhanga Reo. Many of our Kaumatua were at the centre of the inception of Kōhanga Reo here in Aotea. The first Kōhanga Reo opened in the Aotea rohe in 1983.
Te Kōhanga Reo whānau provide environments that are rich in Māori language and culture. The Kōhanga Reo philosophy is a Māori world view and the movement's goal is to revitalise and increase the use of the Māori language and traditional Māori beliefs and customary practices with all who embrace it. This signifies something unique because we are using our own tikanga, kawa, our traditions and our customs with mokopuna and whānau to assist in revitalising te reo me onā tikanga.
Our kaumatua have shared a wealth of knowledge with us. As the guardians of our customs, when they speak you can feel the silence in the room as everyone’s attention is captured. Their eloquent and meaningful words are what guide us in our everyday mahi at Te Kōhanga Reo. This is Te Kōhanga Reo. It is whānau, it is our identity, and it is our role to feed it on to our mokopuna. Welcome to Aotea rohe.
