About us
I roto i ngā Kōhanga Reo tuatahi i whakatūria, ko Te Kōhanga Reo o Orakei me Te Rahuitanga i Ōtara.
Tāmaki Makaurau stretches from Te Raki Pae Whenua (North Harbour) in the north to Te Puao o Waikato in the south, and from Waitemata in the west to Kaiaua in the east. With 43 Kōhanga Reo within its borders, this vibrant region serves as a melting pot for Māori from diverse iwi across the nation, embodying the essence of its name, Tāmaki Makaurau, Tāmaki Herehere o ngā waka.
Among the first Kōhanga Reo to be established were Te Kōhanga Reo o Orakei and Te Rahuitanga in Ōtara. Te Kōhanga Reo o Rahuitanga recently celebrated their 40th birthday. This is testament to the enduring strength of whānau and kaimahi whose belief in the Kōhanga Reo Kaupapa has endured over many years.
In Tāmaki Makaurau, Kōhanga Reo has weathered its fair share of challenges. However, its resilience lies in the unwavering belief in the Kōhanga Reo Kaupapa and the dedication of generations of whānau who are deeply committed to providing their tamariki with a te ao Māori environment rooted in te reo Māori me ona tikanga.
