Pay Parity Update April 2024
Following the recent pay increases across the Salary Bands, and feedback across the Kaupapa, the criteria that sits behind the Salary Bands have been reviewed.
New Salary Band Criteria
The exact details of the changes can be viewed here. In summary there are four (4) broad areas of substantive change:
1. Ensuring that there is a place on the Pay Scale for long serving Kaiāwhina and Kaiako (nine years plus) and that they are recognised without having to enrol or complete qualifications such as Tohu Whakapakari or Tohu Paetahi. This addresses an issue for several Whānau who had experienced and skilled Kaimahi committed to the Kaupapa who did not have qualifications.
However, Kaiako can only access Kaiako steps 1-9 with Tohu Whakapakari and Tohu Paetahi.
2. Focusing on completed qualification rather than enrolments.
3. Ensuring the new degree programme Te Tohu Paetahi is recognised in the Pay Scale criteria.
4. Recognising Raukura (Kaimahi that are graduates of Kura Kaupapa Māori) that have a high level of Reo proficiency.
These changes to the criteria came into effect as of 15 April and will be backdated to 1 March (alongside the new salaries).
There are two important things Whānau need to ensure as the employers:
1. Kaimahi are not to be disadvantaged through this process. If a Kaimahi was placed on an incorrect Salary Band in the early roll out of Pay Parity, whānau need to ensure the kaimahi maintains that same Salary Band unless the review results in an increase. Your Kaiwhakarite ā-Rohe will work with you if this scenario arises in your Whānau.
2. The second is that there are NO longer 95% or 97% ranges within each Pay Band – all Kaimahi will be on 100% of the Pay Band.
Back pay
In light of the numerous queries from whānau and kaimahi asking when the back pays will be paid out, we are looking to commence this process in the 2nd week of May 2024. This will allow time for Pay Reviews to bring kaimahi salaries in line with the new rates and new criteria to be completed. Please rest assured whānau that the back pays will be paid and covers the following periods:
1. From 1 November 2023 to 1 March 2024 - processing will commence 2nd week of May 2024.
2. From 2 March 2024 up to the date that your kaimahi started being paid at their new rates. We are waiting to receive the funds from the Ministry for this period. Once received, it will be processed for payment.
