Environmental Scan Te Kōhanga Reo now live
E kī ana te kōrero; "He kākano i ruia mai i Rangiatea, e kore ai e ngaro", heoi anō, kia whakataukītia ake i konei; “He kaupapa, he Kōhanga Reo te taonga i ruia mai i Rangiatea, e kore ai e ngaro.”
He mihi mahana tēnei ki a koutou i tēnei wā, i te ahunga mai o te tau hou i raro anō i ngā hīhī o Tamanui Te Rā, me te manako nui e noho ora ana koutou, e te whānau.
As advised in our 22 December pānui, Te Poari Matua o Te Kōhanga Reo has decided to undertake an environmental scan of Kōhanga Reo. Driven by the change in the political landscape, the recent climatic weather events, and the impact that Covid-19 has had on our Kaupapa, Te Poari Matua agreed that we need to take stock and commissioned a review.
Long-time Kōhanga Reo stalwart, Mother, Nanny and Māori educational specialist, Dr Kathie Irwin, has been appointed to take on the review. Her experience is second to none having led many Government Reviews and Parliament Select Committees over the course of her career. Dr Kathie Irwin has often been called on to provide expert advice and leadership for Te Kōhanga Reo and Government Agencies and was recognised by the Queens Awards New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Māori education in 2021.
To clarify, the review will have four main phases.
1. Kōhanga whanau will be surveyed about their views of the top three issues facing Kōhanga and the solutions they propose to these (Dec 2023 - Feb 2024).
2. A PESTLE analysis (political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental) will be undertaken to review research which helps the Trust to understand the external environment in which Kōhanga function (Dec 2023 – Feb 2024).
3. SWOT analyses will be undertaken through hui-a-rohe with Kōhanga whānau to explore current internal features of the movement (Feb 2024).
4. The findings of the three data collection phases above wil be analysed and a series of
findings and recommendations presented to the Poari Matua (Mar 2024).
The final report will be peer reviewed before publication.
Te Poari Matua encourages Kōhanga whānau to take part in this project and have their say about what the future holds.
Following on from our pānui in December, we have now included the link to the Environmental scan form for you to complete. Please click here to access the form and have your say.
The form will remain open until 28 February 2024.
We look forward to receiving your submissions.
Noho ora mai.
