Improving Kōhanga Reo technology and tools
"Nau mai, e Hine Takurua, kia wānanga tahi ai tātou i ngā kaupapa huhua o Te Kōhanga Reo."
As we acknowledge the chill of winter, we come together to discuss the mahi and effort of Kōhanga Reo.
Our Technology Programme is all about improving the tools and systems that whānau and kaimahi use every day to support the Kaupapa of Kōhanga Reo. There’s a lot happening, so here’s a reminder of what you need to know.
LAUNCHED: Our new website and Visual Identity Kete
Our new website is now live along with the Visual Identity Kete. If you haven’t had a look already, check out the Whānau Whakahaere | Kōhanga Reo management section. You’ll find useful info there about Police Vetting, Processes and Procedures and more. And don’t forget to take a look at the templates and resources in the Visual Identity Kete - there are heaps of colourful templates there for you to pick up and use next time you need to create a new report, slide pack or poster.
Ngā mihi nui to everyone who has provided feedback so far. It’s great to hear you are enjoying the look and feel of the website and the new resources in the kete.
To find out more, see the website pānui and Visual Identity Kete pānui.
IN PROGRESS: New laptops and devices for Kōhanga Reo
The delivery of new desktop computers, laptops and tablets to Kōhanga Reo is underway! This is happening rohe by rohe so that you get dedicated support from Te Ara Hiko to help everyone get set up. See the schedule below to check out when Te Ara Hiko will be coming your way.
Calling all Kaiwhakarite – have you placed the technology order for your Kōhanga Reo yet? If not, check out the options available here and kōrero with whānau to decide what will suit the needs of your Kōhanga Reo best.
Remember, the standard product bundles are FREE. You only need to provide whānau hui minutes if additional items are purchased, or the Kōhanga Reo signs up to a 2 degrees plan or lease of a Brother printer.
Don’t worry if whānau are unsure about what to choose, Te Ara Hiko will be in touch to help you confirm your order. Or, if you are ready now, you can contact the team for a call back.
When Te Ara Hiko visit your rohe, they will run Tech Hubs to help everyone get set up with their new device. As part of the rollout process, Te Ara Hiko will be in touch with whānau to verify purchasing of an Office 365 licence to enable installation of the latest Office 365 apps onto new and existing devices.
Tāmaki Makaurau were the first rohe to receive this support in May.
You can check out what happens at the Tech Hub in the video below…

Getting set up right – things to do before your new devices arrive
While you are waiting for your new computers, laptops and tablets to arrive, there are a few important steps you can take to help make the set up of your new devices quicker and easier:
Step 1: Login with your new KoAu username and password
We have moved to a new identity access management system called KoAu. Trust kaimahi are already logging in via Okta and Kōhanga Reo whānau and kaimahi are in the process of shifting across too. Already over 690 people have signed in.
The good thing about KoAu is that, once you are fully set up, you can log in just once to access multiple Trust systems – this is called ‘single sign-on’. It also gives you access to the most up to date Office365 apps and tools to help you do your mahi.
There are a few set up steps to follow when you sign on for the first time through Okta , including setting a new password for access to all Trust systems.
To get started, see your ‘Welcome to Okta’ email from Te Ara Hiko to find your KoAu username and password, and follow the set up instructions. You can contact Te Ara Hiko if you need any help along the way.
If you haven’t received an email yet, you can request a KoAu login by filling in the KoAu account request form.
For more info, see the Introduction to Okta video and How to activate your Okta account guide.
Step 2: Delete old files saved to your computer
Do you have old, out of date documents saved to the hard drive of your current device?
Get ready to receive your new device by deleting old files. This will help make the set up of your new computer, laptop or tablet much faster. Any unnecessary documents that are taking up space on your current computer will slow down the process of setting up your new one.
Important Tip! Don’t install OneDrive on your old laptop or computer – you will lose your emails! This is because the older Office products on our older Kōhanga Reo devices are not compatible with OneDrive. Please wait until you are set up with your new device before saving files to OneDrive.
Step 3: Delete old emails to reduce the size of your inbox
Tidying up your email inbox will make the transition to your new device, which will include migration of your email to the Cloud, much quicker and easier.
Take a look at your email inbox. Do you have lots of old emails going back months or even years? If so, please delete old emails you no longer need before your new device arrives.
E whitawhita ake nei te ahi o Te Kōhanga Reo, kia hoki mai anō tōna rongo ki te whakamahana i te ngākau o te kaupapa.
